About 60 Years of Back to Godhead Magazine

At the Bhaktivedanta Archives, we store original copies of Back to Godhead (BTG) magazine going back to the 1940's. It is from that complete collection of BTGs that this product is derived.

Over a period of time, these original issues have been digitally scanned by various devotees and recently assembled into Adobe PDFs (Portable Document Format) for easy viewing. The PDFs are distributed on one (1) double-sided DVD-ROM disc, along with an HTML cover index and article index, sorted by issue, title and author.

PDFs and HTML can be viewed on the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh OS operating systems with appropriate software, however because of the large size of the PDFs and the requirements of the Adobe Reader itself, the following system specifications are:

  • 256 MB RAM

The entire collection of PDFs is over 6 GB. Hence the use of a double-sided DVD-ROM disc for distribution. Browsing the collection from the disc only allows you to access part of the collection. For example, side one of the disc only includes those indexes and issues between 1944 and 1989; side two includes 1991-2004 (BTG was not published in 1990). It is highly recommended that you install the entire product to our personal hard drive in order have full access to the indexes and PDFs with quick access time.

Because of our desire to create a product that was cross-platform, we made the decision to base the user-interface on HTML. This decision did not come without some limitations. It is not possible to access the index from your hard drive while at the same time immediately accessing the PDFs from the DVD.
